Stenography Course
What is Stenography?
Stenography is the art of writing as fast as someone speaks, using short symbols, lines and curves instead of full words. A normal speaker talks at 100 to 150 words a minute, and no one can write that fast in ordinary handwriting. Shorthand solves this problem. One small stroke can stand for a whole word, and a few connected strokes can stand for an entire phrase.
A person who does this work is called a stenographer. Stenographers listen to a speaker, write down every word in shorthand, and later turn those notes into a clean, typed document. Because of this, the job needs three skills together: good listening, fast shorthand writing and accurate typing.
Where is Stenography Used?
Stenographers are needed in many places:
• Courts: to record statements, questions and orders during a case
• Government offices and departments: to take dictation from officers and prepare letters, notes and official records
• Private companies: to write down meetings, interviews and dictated letters
• Competitive exams: many government exams, such as those for Stenographer Grade C and D, test shorthand speed and typing
Even today, with so much technology around, offices still need people who can take dictation correctly and type it out without mistakes. That is why stenography continues to be a steady career choice.
